A Message from TPSS Board of Directors

Dear TPSS Families,

We hope that you and your families are doing well and staying safe and healthy. We are writing to explain the status of our spring season and outline your options going forward.  But first give us a minute please to tell the story of our league, a story that now includes you.

For a long time, ballfields in Takoma Park and Silver Spring sat silent, as if they were off limits to kids, yes, eerily much like today. Then about 30 years ago a group of parents, without any help from governments or other institutions, took it upon themselves to find a way to bring organized baseball and softball to the boys and girls in our community.  This was easier said than done. Think of what is involved – volunteer coaches, uniforms, balls, helmets, bats, bases, catcher’s gear, field permits, field grooming, sponsorships, umpires, not to mention a registration system, rules, insurance, you get the picture.

It took a phenomenal generosity of spirit, but it didn’t stop with the founders of our league.  Every season TPSS must rely on a new set of parent volunteers to serve as commissioners and coaches.  On every team goodhearted moms and dads assist with communications, snacks, and camaraderie. Also, all the tasks that the league founders took on must still be carried out behind the scenes.  What originally started as a single spring season has now grown to provide year round opportunities to play the sport our kids love. We have introduced fall ball, winter clinics as well as other opportunities to extend the season.

One thing TPSS is most proud of is our league-wide philosophy that any girl or boy that wants to play, can play regardless of the family’s wherewithal to pay the fee.  We work with many local organizations to bring baseball and softball opportunities, free of charge, to disadvantaged kids in our community.

Of course, we do all of this because we love the game, we love our kids, and we love the life lessons that baseball and softball provide.  We are parents like yourselves, and we have not given up hope that at some point in 2020 everyone who was registered this spring will have the chance to hit the ball and run the bases.

At this point, however, the reality is different. Parks have closed all of their ballfields until May 31. The safety and health of our great athletes is our #1 priority.  We do not know when the first pitch will be thrown. So, we want to offer you a choice of three alternatives:

Option 1: Refund your registration for spring, 2020 season (minus credit card processing fees)

Option 2: Provide a credit toward the next season which would apply for a season in summer, fall or next spring

Option 3: Make a donation to ensure TPSS can continue serving kids in our community.  We are a 501(c)(3)              organization so your donation is tax deductible.

Please take a moment and complete the form to share your decision. We ask that you let us know by April 30, 2020.

Thank you for helping make TPSS a great community resource and we look forward to seeing your players on the field very soon.

Stay safe,

TPSS Baseball and Softball Board of Directors
