TPSS Girls Softball has four divisions supporting players ages 6 - 14. We provide community based playing and training opportunities on local Takoma Park and Silver Spring fields.

Our mission is simple:  Teach softball and team building skills to the girls and play games in an atmosphere of fun. We want girls to love softball.

Division Descriptions:

Special Note: Some games will be scheduled on Sunday afternoons, but that will be noted on the schedule, which you will receive the week of April 24, 2017.

8U:

The 8U division is all coach-pitch. The emphasis is on fun and skills development. The plan is for teams to practice once a week with one game each weekend during the season. Girls are introduced to the basics of hitting, catching, throwing, fielding and base running in a non-competitive environment. Each player has the opportunity to come to bat and run the bases each inning as outs are not kept at this level. Parents are highly involved with this age group at practices and games. Games will be played on Saturday mornings.

10U:

The 10U division is for girls who are still learning to play the game and developing basic skills like hitting, catching, throwing and base running. At the 10U level, we introduce kid-pitch but modify the rules—including some coach pitching-- so that the pace of the game remains active. The 10U player is still a beginner but learning the skills to advance to the next level. Teams practice once a week and will typically play on Saturday mornings.

 12U:

Players in the 12U division, while they may still be first-time players, will have the ability and skills to play by more traditional softball rules. They will be introduced to sliding, stealing, dropped third-strike, and the in-field fly rule. This division sees an increased speed of the pitched ball (kid-pitch) and an increased number of defensive plays. All girls in this division should be ready to hit a pitched ball and know the rules of the game. Teams practice once a week and will typically play games on Saturday afternoons.

14U:

The 14U division is comprised of players who have demonstrated skills commensurate with the highest level of play that TPSS has to offer. The 14U division has faster/better pitching and an overall higher quality of play than 12U. Although this division is still skill-based and recreational, and there are no try-outs, girls should come ready to play the game more competitively. Teams practice once a week and will typically play games on Saturday afternoons.

Girls 10U Softball - the 10U program is both skills-directed and competitive, with an emphasis on skill development. 10U uses 11" softballs, with players pitching from a distance of 35 feet from home plate.  This level uses a combination of machines to pitch, coach pitch, and kid pitch as our young players are not quite ready to pitch the duration of the game.

Girls 12U Softball ‑ the 12U program is both instructional and competitive with an emphasis on instruction. 12U uses 12" softballs, with players pitching from regulation distance.  Before the season begins, several pitching clinics are held to help players who are interested in pitching during the year.  Umpires call balls and strikes and make the calls for plays in the field.

Girls 8U Softball - the goal of 8U is to teach the girls the basics skills of the game in a fun, friendly environment with the hope that they will continue in TPSS Girls Softball and Takoma Fire in future years.  Parents pitch and assist in the field, helping to facilitate the game as our young players learn the intricacies of the sport.
